Southampton welcomes the Olympic Torch on Saturday 14 July 2012.

Southampton has been invited to host one of the legs of the Olympic Torch Relay with an evening celebration. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity that will stay in people’s memories and put Southampton on the global map.

The London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay is a defining moment for each Olympic Games. It will involve 8,000 inspiring people carrying the Olympic Flame – one of the enduring symbols of the Olympic Games – around the UK for 70 days. The aim is to spread the Olympic spirit as well as the message of peace and friendship, and to start the Olympic celebrations both here in the UK and around the world.

The Olympic Flame will arrive in the UK from Greece on Friday 18 May 2012 and will start on Saturday 19 May 2012.

Throughout its 70 day journey around the UK, the Olympic Torch Relay will visit urban areas, places of outstanding natural beauty as well as sporting and cultural landmarks. It will visit different communities and connect people to the Olympic Games, its heroes, heroines and its spirit.

It will come to Southampton on Saturday 14 July and then on Friday 27 July 2012 the Flame will enter the Olympic Stadium to light the cauldron in the Opening Ceremony and formally start the London 2012 Olympic Games.

We will welcome the Olympic Flame in a way that is unique and special to Southampton.

More details soon about the Southampton event.

Story time at your local libraries

Southampton City council run story times once a week all year round at most of there libraries. The stories are fun and interactive and sometimes followed by a craft activity where you can make something to take home. They are a fun way of introducing your children to books in a relaxed, informal environment.

Some libraries also do Music, Rhythm and Ryhme sessions for babies and toddlers. This involves lots of singing and creates lots of noise! Toddler Time and Fun Time offer similar experiences.

All the session are completely free and there is no need to book, just turn up. You and your child will be very welcome.
